Why Does Real Diamond Jewelry Have That Special Sparkle?

Nothing sparkles like a diamond!

Anyone who wears any type of diamond jewelry, or have seen someone wearing it, must have noticed that extra special sparkle that only diamonds have. They have a unique shining quality that captures the light and reflect it back to us in a dazzling brilliance.

It is strange to think that they were created so deep down in the earth in the absence of any source of light. Unpolished rough diamonds are not that impressive to look at. Even though all diamonds are actually quite cool because they are the hardest material on the planet.

So why do the diamonds in diamond jewelry have that unmistaken brilliant sparkle?

There are actually several reasons:

Diamonds Have A Very High Refractive Index

One of the reasons why diamonds sparkle so beautifully is because it has a very high refractive index. The refractive index is a dimensionless number that tells us how much the light is bent when it passes through one medium to another.

Diamonds have one of the largest refractive indexes of 2.42. Compare that to the refractive indexes of window glass (1.52) and water (1.33). Diamond cutters use the fact that the light is bent so much when it enters a diamond to ‘bounce’ it from one facet to another.

The famous diamond cutter and scientist Marcel Tolkowsky came to the conclusion that 58 facets are the ideal number to make a diamond shine in the way that it is supposed to!

Diamond Jewelry Buying Tip: You should NOT be able to see the ring’s mounting through the diamond because the light is bounced around so much.

It is time to add
sparkle to your life!

The Cut Of The Diamond

The term the cut of the diamond is often used interchangeably with the term diamond shape. We will get diamond shape in a minute though.

A diamond’s cut actually refers to how well the diamond cutter did his or her job. It refers to the number, proportions and symmetry of the cut facets. The better the cut of the diamond, the more it reflects the light.

The highest grade for a diamond cut is ‘excellent’ and the lowest grade is ‘poor’. A diamond with a poor grade will lose light from the sides or the bottom of the diamond instead of reflecting it to the viewer through the top, or the table of the diamond.

Diamond Jewelry Buying Tip : Be careful compromise on the cut of your diamond for a higher carat weight. Diamonds are supposed to shine as brightly as they can!

The Shape Of The Diamond

If you are thinking by now that more facets equals to more sparkle, you are absolutely correct. (Though it still has to be well cut.)

It is no wonder that the round brilliant cut introduced by Tolkowsky more than a hundred years is still the most favorite shape for diamond engagement rings. Other diamond shapes with a lot of sparkle, and facets, are the oval, Marquise and pear shapes.

Marquise Cut Loose Diamond (0.76 Ct, Olive Green Color Irradiated), SI1 ClarIty Enhanced)

Next in line for sparkle are the
heart and Princess shapes, followed by the cushion, Emerald, Asscher and radiant diamond shapes. Note that the second mentioned group of diamond shapes all have less facets and larger tables.
Heart Cut Loose Diamond (0.81 Ct, I Color, SI3 Clarity)
Heart Cut Loose Diamond (0.81 Ct, I Color, SI3 Clarity)

The Baguette shaped diamond is the least sparkly diamond shape.

Diamond Jewelry Buying Tip : Though some diamonds shapes sparkle a bit more than others, only buy the diamond shape that YOU love the most.

The Number And Size Of The Inclusions

We have learned by now that the brilliance of a diamond is strongly connected to the way that it interacts with light. Inclusions are small natural imperfections inside diamonds and usually look like tiny black spots.

The larger the size and number of the inclusions, the less sparkle the diamond will have.

Diamond Jewelry Buying Tip : Keep in mind that inclusions give your diamond a unique character, they are only found in natural earth mined diamonds AND they bring down the price of the diamond jewelry significantly!

Diamond Jewelry Setting

The way that the diamond is mounted in the jewelry piece also influences its sparkle. A diamond engagement ring with a prong setting literally lifts the diamond above the ring itself, exposing it to as much light as possible.

Jewelry pieces with a cluster of smaller diamonds as well as a diamond ring with a halo also have extra sparkle. The larger the number of diamonds, the bigger the shine.

18k White Gold Round Cut Halo Diamond Shank Engagement Ring (0.55 Ct, F, VS1)

18k White Gold Round Cut Halo Diamond Shank Engagement Ring (0.55 Ct, F, VS1)

Diamond Jewelry Buying Tip : Upgrade a diamond with a smaller carat weight (and less sparkle) to a sparkling super diamond ring by surrounding it with a halo of small inexpensive diamonds.

The diamond’s sparkle is one of its best qualities and definitely the first thing that everyone notice. Take your time looking at the various cuts, shapes and settings that are available and then buy a piece of diamond jewelry that will let you bask in its shine!

Feel free to contact us at [email protected] or 1-800-557-7095 for any questions. Sparkling or not..:)

Does Your Diamond Ring’s Settings Suit Your Lifestyle?

What Is A Diamond Ring Setting?

The ring’s setting is the metal part of the ring that holds the diamond in place. It is important to pay attention to your diamond ring’s setting, because it is going to have to be just durable as the diamond.

Why The Ring’s Setting Is Important

Your ring setting is the foundation of your entire ring design. Throughout the years, diamond jewelry designers have come up with various ingenious ways to place the diamond in such a way that catches and reflects the light because nothing sparkles like a diamond!

Even though diamonds are extremely strong, exposed corners and sharp points can chip. Luckily there is a large number of diamond ring settings to consider that will not only protect the diamonds in your ring but will also showcase it beautifully.

We have the ring that
suits your lifestyle

Multi-Stone Rose Gold Circle Diamond Engagement Ring

Types Of Diamond Ring Settings Available

Prong Setting

This setting is the most popular for engagement rings. Four or six small prongs lift the diamond upwards, allowing you to also see the sides of the diamond. There is no doubt that the solitaire diamond held by the small prongs is the main star of the ring, even though there may be more diamonds on the shank.

14K Yellow Gold Prong Set Emerald Diamond Engagement Ring
14K Yellow Gold Prong Set Emerald Engagement Ring

Advantages Of The Prong Setting

The diamond can catch and flash back the light back beautifully because it is not covered by metal.

Limitations Of The Prong Setting

The diamond sometimes snags on long-sleeves. A jeweler should periodically examine the ring to check that the prongs are still tight and holding the diamond in place.

Bar Setting

Small vertical or diagonal metal bars hold the diamonds into place. The diamonds are still exposed to the light on at the top and bottom part of the ring.

18k Yellow Gold Pear & Round Bar Set Diamond Engagement Ring
18k Yellow Gold Pear & Round Bar Set Diamond Blue Enhanced Ring

Advantages Of The Bar Setting

It is easier to see the diamonds because they are not completely surrounded by metal. This also amplifies the sparkle of the diamond ring.

Limitations Of The Bar Setting

It can be difficult and expensive to resize the ring if diamonds are wrapped all the way around the ring.

Bezel Setting

In a bezel-set ring, the diamond is surrounded by a metal rim that is custom-made to take the shape of the diamond. It was a popular setting in the 19th century but today the bezel setting is appreciated for its sleek and modern look.

18k Yellow Gold Spade Cut Bezel Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring
18k Yellow Gold Spade Cut Bezel Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring

Advantages Of The Bezel Setting

This setting an excellent choice for anyone with an active lifestyle because the diamond sits flush and therefor do not snag on clothing. The diamond is well-protected and since there are not prongs that need to be checked, these types of rings are much easier to look after.

Limitations Of The Bezel Setting

A large part of the part diamond is covered by metal. Diamond rings with a bezel setting have a lesser amount of light reflection and brilliance than other ring settings.

Gypsy Setting

The diamonds or diamonds sit flush into a drilled hole in the band of the ring. The metal is then hammered by the jeweler to keep the diamond into place. This setting is often found in men’s wedding bands.

18k Yellow Gold Round Cut Gypsy Set Diamond Wedding Band
18k Yellow Gold Round Cut Gypsy Set Diamond Wedding Band

Advantages Of The Gypsy Setting

This is an excellent choice for anybody who works with their hands because the diamonds are well-protected and very unlikely to fall out.

Limitations Of The Gypsy Setting

The diamonds are sometimes not very noticeable because such a limited amount of light passes through them.

Tension Setting

In a tension setting, the diamond is held into place by the pressure that the metal applies to the stone. Tiny grooves in the metal anchors the diamond more securely in its place.

18k Gold Round Cut Tension Setting Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring
18k Two Tone Gold Round Tension Set Solitaire Diamond Engagement Ring

Advantages Of The Tension Setting

The diamond (and the unusual setting) catches a large amount of light and reflects a large amount of brilliance and sparkle.

Limitations Of The Tension Setting

It is difficult and sometimes not possible to resize diamond rings with a tension setting. Diamonds can look smaller in this type of setting.

Invisible Or Illusion Setting

In a diamond ring with an invisible setting, the setting of the ring is not visible to the viewer. It seems as though the diamonds are not connected by anything to the shank part of the ring. Several diamonds are placed flush next to each other, giving the illusion of one large diamond surface.

18k Yellow Gold Invisible Setting Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Ring
18k Yellow Gold Invisible Setting Princess Cut Diamond Ring

Advantages Of The Invisible Setting

Diamond rings made with an invisible setting look large and always get a lot of attention.

Limitations Of The Invisible Setting

It is sometimes reported that the diamonds fall out from the invisible setting, so be smart about where you buy your diamond jewelry from online. Make sure that it is a reputable company with a lot of experience and satisfied customers.

So Which Ring Setting Is The Best For My Lifestyle?

People with very active lifestyles, or who work with their hands, should consider diamond rings with more secure settings such as the bezel, bar and gypsy settings.

Diamond rings with invisible, tension and prong settings look great when you are working in an office, attend parties or just go about your usual day. It is however a good idea to remove the ring when you are playing sports or have a messy hobby such as pottery.

Most of important of all though is to consider your own personal style and preferences. Research the various types of diamond ring settings and look at different types of diamond rings online. The type of diamond ring that you like the most is usually the one that will suit your lifestyle the best.

Buying Vintage Diamond Jewelry Online: Five Things That You Should Know

18k Rose & White Gold Invisible Setting Diamond Heart Vintage Pendant (0.75 Ct, G Color, VS1 Clarity)

Buying vintage diamond jewelry has become fashionable ( 😊) recently for various reasons. They are often less expensive, are made with a craftsmanship that stood the test of time and are considered friendlier towards the environment because no recent mining was done to produce them.

Vintage jewelry pieces are usually defined as pieces that where made twenty years or more ago and antique jewelry pieces is at least a hundred years old.

Sparkle unique with
our vintage jewelry

Fashionistas also love ‘hunting’ for that special unique vintage piece. They are confident with their own style and love one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. Vintage jewelry not only help to elegantly sparkle up an outfit but are often conversation pieces that will draw attention to the wearer.

The internet is of the best places to shop for these gorgeous and unique jewelry pieces. We have put this list together of five buying tips to help you navigate through the world wide web of online vintage diamond jewelry.

Research and question the seller

Check that the online diamond jewelry seller is reputable. You can do this by being smart about buying diamond jewelry online by looking for reviews from other buyers and if there is a return policy in place. An honest diamond jewelry will also be happy to answer questions about the vintage jewelry that they are selling. For example, where they acquired the piece from and its general condition.

14k White and Yellow Gold Vintage Locket Pendant (0.4 Ct, G-H, SI2)

Check the condition of the vintage piece

Some wear is usually be acceptable but generally the vintage jewelry piece should be in a good condition. Inspect the photos and 3D videos, if available, carefully. There should be no broken chains or severely chipped diamond corners.

Keep in mind thought that you want your vintage diamond jewelry to have some patina. Patina is the sheen that jewelry gets after years of use. A vintage jewelry piece that looks brand-new is probably a remake based on an older design.

If you are still unsure about buying vintage jewelry online, make sure that the seller offers a return policy. This way you can still get your money back if you only discover unwanted flaws when you receive the piece.

Look for information about the weight of the jewelry

Vintage jewelry pieces tend to be more solid and weigh more that modern jewelry pieces. Most online jewelry retailers now provide the weight and measurements of their jewelry but you can also contact them for this information.

18k Gold Multi-Stone Vintage Marquise Drop Earrings (Blue Irradiated)

The price tag is a big clue

If you are new to buying vintage diamond jewelry online and are unsure if a piece is really vintage or not, the price of the vintage piece can be a good indication of its authenticity.

Be aware of “too good to be true” deals. Diamonds and gold, even if they are set in an old-fashioned setting, are still valuable all over the world. Vintage jewelry may be a bit cheaper than popular modern pieces but the heavier weight of the gold and the presence of timeless diamonds will not cost the same as a flea market find.

Buy only what you love

Vintage diamond jewelry pieces carry a sense of nostalgia and romance and may not be always be 100% your style. Be sure that you are in love with this jewelry because they have already proven that they will be around for a long time.

If you are not convinced that a specific piece of vintage jewelry is for you, keep on looking. Everyday more and more diamond jewelry pieces get the vintage label. Your special vintage piece is out there waiting for you to find it!
